Although I grew up in Minnesota I only visited Lake Superior recently, discovering the mountains and streams on its north shore. On a hike there, I was captivated by the markings made by churning foam from several short waterfalls. In this frame, the display of swirling foam intertwined with cloud reflections seemed magical, like a wish being granted or the future divined, hence the name.

This image makes me imagine undulations of space-time out in some galaxy, with starlight shining through. What physics rules that universe? I found it on the north shore of Lake Superior, where the water was often choppy and the lake’s size sustains waves large enough to surf at times.

Another image from the Temperance River near Lake Superior in the portfolio, this one depends more on reflected skylight than surface foam to form the composition. A streak of light draws a path across the darkness, showing the way. Who of us doesn’t need this now and again?

As a child I learned the biblical creation story - "And God saith, 'Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.'" (Genesis 1:6) – and later the science of creation - that all matter came into existence in an infinitely dense and hot singularity, the Big Bang. Either way, like in this image I imagine a great turbulence filled with light and dark, motion and sound, and fundamental materials like water.

Near the north shore of Lake Superior, I found several short waterfalls churning up a lot of foam, painting an endless, evolving artwork on the water’s surface as it flowed by. This exposure makes me think of the interconnectedness of everything and how that’s fluid and ever-changing - much like a knitted scarf unravels when a loose yarn is pulled, and can be knit again into something new.

The wild and unruly exuberance of this image speaks to the adventurer in me, seeming to say - break the rules, abandon the “shoulds”, color (waaaay) outside the lines…don’t wait just GO! Fitting, perhaps, that it was created by the energy of a plunging waterfall, in a place I’d not been before despite growing up in the state.

Whether it’s water spreading over a surface, gas filling a vacuum, or frost growing across a frigid windshield, nature seems to want to fill a void.
